The Aspens - a Great Choice for Whistler Lodging

Author: Henry Schlee

Whistler, like other ski resorts, has a wide variety of rental accommodation available, much of which is characterized as ski-in, ski-out. Take care when you see this term and enquire closely as to exactly what it means, since you may find that it really means hiking distance to the slopes if you are really, really fit. The Aspens, however, is right on the slopes. This sort of location is often characterized as true ski-in, ski-out, and when you see this term you are usually assured of an extremely short distance between your building and the edge of the piste. In the case of The Aspens, this distance is around 5 yards not much to complain about there And if you need to tune up your skis, or rent some different ones, there is a ski shop onsite.

The Aspens also offers a large outdoor swimming pool, open year-round and several outdoor hot tubs. You can watch skiers swishing past as you sit back in one of the hot tubs. There is also a very spacious central lobby area surround a large fireplace where you can meet friends before going out if your apartment is too small for your group to socialize. For this is one of the drawbacks of the Aspens: it is built exclusively with one and two-bedroom apartments which sleep a maximum of four to six people (and six involves the use of the sofabed in the living room which is a bit of a short straw for those who have to use it).

The other drawback to The Aspens is that it is a bit of a hike to the Village, which is where all the nightlife and restaurant action is to be found. You can get there fairly easily on the free Village shuttle, but otherwise this is a 15 minute walk, and coming back again you are climbing a pretty decent gradient. This is clearly the price of being ski-in, ski-out: if you want to ski-out you have to have a slope to ski down, and what goes down must come up again, to paraphrase the old adage.

However, if you want to be right on the slopes, and dont mind taking the shuttle or walking to the Village, it is hard to beat the Aspens. Aspens units are distributed through many different resellers, but for a good selection try the options available on this link: Whistler lodgings, where you can also find townhomes and freestanding chalets all over the resort.
