Do You Want Just Another Vacation - Or An Adventure!

Author: Michael Domeck

Are you bored with the same old vacation ideas and the same old places you go every year? Do the kids always want to travel somewhere new and exciting for a vacation? Of course they do! Are maybe you and your wife just want to get away to a romantinc interlude for a few days - then try something really unique and make it an adventure!

Instead of planning the same old boring vacation this year make it a travel adventure. Why not go to the seashore and stay in a lighthouse? Or, better yet, become a lighthouse keeper for a week! Now that's a vacation the whole family will talk about for years to come.

Did you know that you can stay in a lighthouse on the Great Lakes, the Eastern coast or on the Pacific coast? There are even lighthouses in Canada and England you can stay in. If you like castles - you'll love the lighthouse in England that is built on top of a castle on the bluffs in Wales.

Depending on the lighthouse location you could even register to become a "lighthouse keeper" for a week. At the very least you can stay in a beautifully restored keepers cottage just like the original lighthouse keepers did - with one exception. Today they have all the modern comforts including TV and HBO!

In most cases these vacations can actually cost you less than a "normal" vacation. A big bonus is you also get to learn a lot about US history. If it had not been for the 100's of lighthouses that dotted our coastlines, in centuries past, the United States could not have grown to what we are today.

As a young nation the US depended heavily on trade and the coastlines were dangerous to navigate. The US Lighthouse Service was enacted by Congress to build and maintain a system of lighthouses as aids to navagation. Over the last 200+ years these lighthouses have saved countless tens of thousands of lives. Even today they still guide small ships safely back to port every single day.

People have always been fascinated by these tall and lonely structures. Kids love to learn and tell their friends about the great adventures they had. (Side Note: It's called bragging rights!) So while you have some fun your learning about our history and teaching your kids about these great United States. Not to mention the fantastic photos you can take with tha new digital camera. Photographs of lighthouses are some of the most sought after on the Internet. If you don't believe me do a search on "lighthouse" and see how many people are searching for that every month!
